Biography or History:
This agency was created by Act 1 (1917) as the South Carolina Board of Examiners of Opticians and Optometrists for the purpose of examining and licensing practicioners of optometry and opticians. Act 754 (1932) changed the name to the South Carolina Board of Examiners in Optometry, but its responsibilities remained the same. Act 570 (1978) divided these responsibilities between the Optometry Board and a newly created South Carolina Board of Examiners in Opticianry. The Government Restructuring Act of 1993 (ACt 181) placed the board under the Division of Professions and Occupations of the Dept. of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation.
