Biography or History:
The Teaching American History project was administered by the South Carolina Dept. of Archives and History under US Dept. of Education grants. The grants were awarded to Richland School District Two as the primary grantee and a consortium of other participating school districts from around the state. The purpose of the program was to instruct social study teachers in how to use primary sources in the classroom in teaching American history based on the state's academic standards for social studies. Instruction was provided through an annual series of regional summer workshops which resulted in teacher produced lesson plans incorporating primary sources. Numerous local and state-wide cultural agencies and organizations participated as learning sites for participants who attended the workshops.
