The digitized orders in this series were found in a large set of mixed electronic records transferred to the Archives in 2011 at the end of Governor Mark Sanford's administration.

Scope and Content:
This series consists of executive orders or copies of orders issued by the Governor's office and filed with the Secretary of State. An official copy of the executive order should contain the governor's signature, the secretary of state's signature and have the great seal of the state impressed upon it. A large number of the paper orders in this series contain all of those elements, but many are missing one or two of those elements. Digitized records in .pdf format contain all of the elements, though the orders were scanned in grayscale. Of particular note in these records is a group of orders in 1968 declaring a state of emergency in Orangeburg County and other counties in relation to the Orangeburg Massacre. Also of note is a group of orders from 1989 in relation to Hurricane Hugo.

Electronic records for 1965-1998 are organized with a single Portable Document Format (.pdf) file for each year containing all of the orders for that year. For 1999-2010, there is both an individual file for each order and a combined file for each year. Paper records arranged chronologically between 1965 and 1974. Beginning in 1975, orders are arranged by year and thereunder numberically by assigned number. Electronic records are all arranged chronologically by year, thereunder by order number.
