Scope and Content:
This series is the record of Confederate veterans and widows within the county receiving state pensions. The basic document consists of the annual roll prepared by the Probate Judge. Information generally includes class of pension, name and residence of pensioner, widow's husband's name, military unit of veteran or widow's husband, amount paid of pension, and number of persons receiving pensions in each class. Entries may be annotated with notations and or signatures indicating to whom the pensions was delivered or reason pension was not paid. An end of year report to the State Board of Pension may also be included for some years. Associated papers include correspondence to the probate judge from pensioners, receipts of pension received, postal receipts for pensions mailed, and receipts and correspondence related to the payment of funeral expenses for pensioners. The associated papers are filed with their related pension roll. The 1893 pension roll also includes a list of recipients of the 1893 Artificial Limb Fund. Three separate files of funeral expenses for Ellen Gist, Augusta Tate, and Carolina Thomas are found at the end of D5175. In form the series consist of loose rolls and volumes of recorded rolls. No pension rolls are available for 1895-1904 and 1912-1918.

Williamsburg is one of two counties for which Confederate Pension Applications do not survive in the records of the Comptroller General's Confederate Pension Department.
