After July 1, 1911, the probate judge was required to keep a record of marriages. Delayed certificates for marriages performed before that date could be obtained on the oath of the clergy or witnesses who either saw the marriage ceremony, were informed that the marriage had taken place, or knew that the couple had lived together as man and wife.

This series consists of the bound or recorded copy of abstracts of original licenses and return certificates of marriage. Information generally includes the license number, name, residence, age, and race of the bride and groom; name and title of person performing the ceremony; date of issuing the marriage license; and the date of its return. The first volume in the series is a register of marriages prior to 1911. The following volumes are marriage registers that span from 1911 to 1970 and are separated into male and female registers.
