Biography or History:
The first 27 boxes were reworked or partially reworked as an historical file by Mrs. Inez Fripp. Mrs. Fripp joined the State Hospital staff in 1915 as a stenographer and served as executive secretary for the head of the agency for 50 years before retiring to a position as archivist ca. 1965. She was still serving as archivist in 1976 after 61 years with the agency.

Scope and Content:
This series contains administrative files, correspondence, and speeches of the superintendent of the State Hospital and the state director/state commissioner of mental health. The administrative files include both routine and substantive administrative matters and reference material on medical and psychiatric topics. Included are substantial files on the following State Dept. of Mental Health (DMH) facilities: South Carolina State Hospital, Palmetto/Crafts-Farrow State Hospital, G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital, Patrick B. Harris Psychiatric Hospital, William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute, C.M. Tucker Jr. Human Resources Center, and the Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home. Files on Pineland State Training School and Hospital (a DMH facility until 1968) also document the beginnings of the Dept. of Mental Retardation (now the Dept. of Disabilities and Special Needs). Digital files include memorandums of the director.

Arrangement varies but the bulk of the series is filed in a number of alphabetic sequences. The last twelve boxes were retired from an alphabetical scheme but were not retired all at the same time nor boxed in order. Digital files arranged chronologically.
