Biography or History:
The South Carolina Board of Examiners of Opticianry was created as a separate agency in 1978 for the purpose of examining, licensing and regulating the practice of opticianry. This responsibility was previously exercised by the South Carolina Board of Opticians and Optometrists that was created by the General Assembly in 1917 (Act 1). Act 754 (1932) of the General Assembly changed the name to the South Carolina Board of Examiners in Optometry, but the board retained its responsibilities to license and regulate opticians. Act 570 (1978) divided these responsibilities between the Optometry Board and a newly created South Carolina Board of Examiners in Opticianry. The Government Restructuring Act of 1993 (Act 181) placed the board under the Division of Professions and Occupations of the Dept. of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation.
