Scope and Content:
This series consists of documents relating to the charters of municipal corporations and the limits of those municipalities. Filing scheme begins in 1896 when the incorporation function was given to the Secretary of State by the General Assembly. File numbers were assigned in sequence as municipalities filed to renew their charters under the new laws, petitioned for new charters, filed annexations, or otherwise contacted the Secretary of State's office. Documents found in the series may include petitions for incorporation or renewal, certificate of elections related to the incorporations, petitions for dissolution, petitions for amending original charter, filings related to annexation of new territory into the municipal limits, and changes to form of government. The annexation filings usually include an ordinance or resolution of the municipality's governing body, a description of the annexed property, and a plat of the annexed property. A database in this series contains a partial listing of municipal corporations from 1783-1996, and is available in Microsoft Access 2003 (original), 2007, comma separated values (CSV), Portable Document Format (PDF), and spreadsheet formats.
