Biography or History:
The Board's primary mission is protection of the public. In fulfilling this purpose it has two major functions: licensing physicians, physician assistants, respiratory care practitioners, anesthesiologist's assistants, acupuncturists, cardiovascular invasive specialists and investigating and disciplining physicians, physician assistants, respiratory care practitioners, anesthesiologist's assistants, acupuncturists and cardiovascular invasive specialists found to be engaged in misconduct as defined by the Medical Practice Act. This includes illegal, unethical or incompetent conduct. The Board operates pursuant to Sections 40-47-5, et. seq., and 40-1-1, et. seq., Code of Laws of South Carolina, 1976, as amended. Created in 1920, the Board remained an independent agency until the Government Restructuring Act of 1993, effective 1994, transferred all independent regulatory agencies under the newly formed Dept. of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation.
