Established in 1935 by the General Assembly as the State Board of Examination and Registration of Nurses for the purpose of regulating the practice of nursing in South Carolina. Renamed the State Board of Nursing for South Carolina in 1959, the Board remained an independent agency until the Government Restructuring Act of 1993, effective 1994, transferred all independent regulatory agencies under the newly formed Dept. of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. The Board operates pursuant to Sections 40-33-5, et. seq., and 40-1-1, et. seq., Code of Laws of South Carolina, 1976, as amended.

Scope and Content:
This series consists of typed minutes, agendas and other meeting material of open and executive sessions of the State Board of Nursing, its predecessors, and its internal committees. The other material includes reports on accreditation and site visits to South Carolina institutions offering nursing training. The committee minutes will usually be filed with the subsequent minutes of the full board meeting. The exception are executive session minutes of the Disciplinary Review Committee which are filed as a separate subseries and minutes of the Caseload Review Committee and Investigative Review Committee which are filed with the executive session minutes of the full Board. The series is divided into three subseries, Minutes of the State Board of Nursing (open sessions), 1935-2001, Minutes of the State Board of Nursing (executive sessions), 1967-2000, and Minutes of the Disciplinary Review Committee (executive sessions), 1985-2000.
