After the Nullification Crisis of 1838-1839, discussion of secession appeared in Southern States, South Carolina in particular. In 1852, a Constitutional Convention was called to determine the right of the state to secede. The Convention approved, by a lopsided margin, a measure to declare South Carolina's ability and right to secede from the United States.
