This board was created by the General Assembly in 1968 (Act 1226) as the State Board of Social Worker Registration. The name was changed to the Board of Social Work Examiners in 1989. The Board remained an independent agency until the Government Restructuring Act of 1993, effective 1994, transferred all independent regulatory agencies under the newly formed Dept. of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation. The Board operates pursuant to Sections 40-63-5, et. seq., and 40-1-1, et. seq., Code of Laws of South Carolina, 1976, as amended.
