Description: This series contains administrative files, correspondence, and speeches of the superintendent of the State Hospital and the state director/state commissioner of mental health. The administrative files include both routine and substantive administrative matters and reference material on medical and psychiatric topics. Included are substantial files on the following State Dept. of Mental Health (DMH) facilities: South Carolina State Hospital, Palmetto/Crafts-Farrow State Hospital, G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital, Patrick B. Harris Psychiatric Hospital, William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute, C.M. Tucker Jr. Human Resources Center, and the Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home. Files on Pineland State Training School and Hospital (a DMH facility until 1968) also document the beginnings of the Dept. of Mental Retardation (now the Dept. of Disabilities and Special Needs). Digital files include memorandums of the director.
