Biography or History:
Plats were sometimes attached to conveyances in the colonial era to reduce the volume of description needed. By 1868, however, most counties had created separate volumes and indexes for plats. Under S.C. Statute 1934(38)1503, each county was required to maintain separate books to record any plats offered to be recorded by any landholder or persons with an interest in real estate. In 1976, the name of the surveyor was required for recording. In 1977, all roads, buildings, water courses, easements, and distances to the nearest road intersection were also required for recording.
