Biography or History:
The South Carolina Board of Certification of Public Water Treatment Plant Operators was created by the General Assembly in 1966 (Act 1047). The name was changed to the Board of Certification of Environmental Systems Operators in 1972 (Act 125). The Board remained an independent agency until the Government Restructuring Act of 1993, effective 1994, transferred all independent regulatory agencies under the newly formed Dept. of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation. The purpose of the Environmental Certification Board is to license qualified individuals to protect the environment for the citizens of the state. These licensees include operators of water treatment plants, waste water treatment plants, pools and spas, and well drillers. If necessary, the board will discipline individuals who do not comply with requirements.
