This series consists of the certificates of registration for trademarks and service marks as recorded by the Secretary of State from 1910 to 1993. The trademark and service marks were originally recorded in volumes with the pagination continuing from volume to volume to create a unique number for each trademark. Renewal certificates were usually inserted and stapled into the volumes with the original registration. Sometime between June 1981 and October 1982, the Secretary of State's office stopped using volumes for recording this information and the registration certificates were filed by month in folders. Beginning in 1994, applications for registration of trademark or service mark, applications for renewal, certificates of registration, and transfers or assignments of trademarks, were filed together chronologically by date. Applications for registrations of livestock brands are also filed with the trademarks, but are usually found at the beginning of each month's folder.
Scope and Content:
This series also includes a Microsoft Access database kept by the Secretary of State's office beginning sometime in the early 1990s of newly registered and renewed trademarks. The database recorded trademark name, trademark classification, applicant's name and address, date trademark was registered, expiration date, renewal date, assignment date, date first used in the state, and description of the trademark. All fields may not contain information. The database is available in Microsoft Access 97-2003 and 2007 versions. It has been exported to Comma-Separated Values (CSV), Open Document Spreadsheet (ODS), and eXtensible Markup Language (XML) for additional ease of access.
