Thousands of phone calls and home visits by state House District 24's Republican runoff contenders could be washed out today by storms spun off by Hurricane Katrina.

Forecasters say today will be muggy with steady rain, thunderstorms and up to 20-mph winds. How that affects turnout could shape the results of the battle between William Herlong and Bruce Bannister.

Polls will open at 7 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m.

Both campaigns spent the final hours Monday encouraging supporters and asking those who sat out the Aug. 16 primary to vote.

Democrat Michelle Shain, a Greenville City Council member, will face the winner Oct. 4.
