I am originally from N.J. I was a volunteer for the Domestic Violence Assistance program. They are regular citizens that take a course run by their local law enforcement agencies. ( believe at the time I took the course it was 90 hours). The course covered the laws regarding domestic violence in the state from what constitutes domestic violence to how to help a victim fill out an application for a Temporary Restraining Order. It was very informative. The volunteers were called on a rotating basis according to availability. Our initial contact with the victims was either in the police precinct or the hospital. We provided support and comfort just as a rape counselor would do. If the victim wanted to fill out the t.r.o. we would assist them in doing so. We would assist the victim in contacting friends or family, try to arrange safe housing and/ or provide shelter locations for the victims and their children if needed. The first department in N.J. to have this program was the East Brunswick, N.J.P.D. It then became a statewide program under Governor Christie. I thought this might be a helpful program to the police officers in the state of South Carolina as is was to the officers in N.J. I hope this helps your initiative. Teresa M. Wegrzyn
