SHALLOTTE, N.C. - Leadfoots beware.
The N.C. Highway Patrol is looking for you.
Especially this holiday weekend.
Especially at the coast.
With tens of thousands of people expected to come to Brunswick
County beaches for the Fourth of July, the patrol will be cracking
down on speeding and aggressive driving on main roads such as U.S.
17 and U.S. 74.
"Troopers are increasing patrols on interstates and heavily
traveled traffic corridors. Down at the beach corridors, that means
U.S. 17," said N.C. Highway Patrol Lt. Everett Clendenin.
The added enforcement over the weekend follows a three-week
crackdown on seat belt use as part of the N.C. Governor Highway
Safety Program's Click It or Ticket campaign.
More than 400 seat belt citations were issued in Brunswick County
between May 23 and June 12.
Police also made 66 arrests for driving under the influence in
that same time period during saturation patrols and checkpoints as
part of the Click it or Ticket campaign.
Traditionally, the Fourth of July weekend also is targeted for
the state's Booze It and Lose It campaign aimed at drunken
drivers.
That's been changed to Labor Day weekend this year to coincide
with a federal media blitz timed for that weekend instead, said Don
Nail, assistant director for the governor's highway-safety
program.
But that doesn't mean the Highway Patrol won't be looking for
drunken drivers this weekend in an effort to reduce traffic
fatalities, Clendenin said.
There were 11 deaths on N.C. highways over the 2004 Fourth of
July weekend, although none were in Brunswick County.
Brunswick County still had its share of deaths.
There were 21 fatalities on Brunswick County roads this past
year, down from 23 in 2003.
