COLUMBIA, S.C. -Gov. Mark Sanford has vetoed
four unsigned resolutions that would exempt schools in four counties
from making up days missed because of inclement weather.
The bills are unconstitutional local legislation, Sanford said in
letters to House Speaker David Wilkins and Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, who
presides over the Senate.
The governor suggested the Legislature establish a general
statute that would say when a school would not be required to make
up missed days or give school districts more autonomy.
The bills deal with missed days at schools in Chester, Dillon,
Darlington and York counties.
Sanford has vetoed other local legislation before, saying he
wants lawmakers to eliminate the long-standing practice of passing
laws that affect only one county, which the state Constitution
prohibits.
