MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The race for Myrtle Beach
mayor is down to incumbent Mark McBride and challenger John
Rhodes.
McBride got 37 percent of Tuesday's vote and Rhodes got 33
percent in the three-person general election. Fewer than 200 votes
separated the two who will be in a runoff Nov. 15.
Judy Rodman received 1,360 votes or 30 percent in the race and
said she is giving her support to Rhodes against the often
contentious two-term Mayor McBride.
"I think our citizens have shown in supporting Judy and myself
with their votes that they definitely want change," Rhodes said.
"It's time to turn around and get serious again and win it
outright."
McBride said Tuesday he thinks his experience as mayor and a
council member will give him the edge in the runoff.
The late Robert M. Grissom is the only other three-term mayor in
the resort town's 67-year history. McBride defeated Grissom by 42
votes to take over as mayor in 1998.
