Dear Mr. O'Tuel,
Thank you for your recent correspondence. Beginning October 1, 2015,
South Carolina experienced the most significant weather event in a
generation resulting in heavy flooding across the Midlands and
Lowcountry. As the historic storm hit South Carolina, damaging
businesses and homes across our state, farmers were not spared.
Since the beginning of my administration, I have stood with the
agriculture community and have been supportive of the farms that drive
so much of South Carolina's economy. This is why I asked the United
States Department of Agriculture for a disaster declaration and
personally worked with them to expedite crop insurance claims. Many of
South Carolina's business owners were affected by this storm, including
farmers, and I support the agriculture industry but also believe it
should be treated equally with other businesses in the state. We
should not do for one industry what we will not do for all.
Again, thank you for your interest in South Carolina's agriculture
community; please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of
assistance on this or any other issue. God bless.
My very best,
Nikki R. Haley
