DNR wins State Library Notable Document Award
The South Carolina State Library recently presented the S.C. Department of Natural Resources with one of 10 South Carolina Notable State Documents Awards for the document, "2011-2012 Sportsman’s Calendar & Almanac."
The Notable State Documents selections are announced annually on or near Freedom of Information Day, March 16, the birthday of President James Madison, an early proponent of citizen access to government information.
Awards were presented to the winning agencies by David Goble, State Library Director, at a morning ceremony at the State Library on May 7. "I salute South Carolina state agencies that continue to make their information available to the public, either in print form or electronically. The agencies honored today continue a fine tradition of open government in the Palmetto State," said Goble.
The South Carolina Wildlife (SCW) magazine Sportsman’s Calendar & Almanac is a part of an SCW subscription and comes each year as a special version of the July-August issue (individual copies are also available for $4 plus shipping through the SC Wildlife Shop). The calendar runs from September through August (aligning with the traditional start of hunting season in the fall).
The calendar is a showcase for South Carolina’s sporting and outdoor heritage and wildlife conservation, with beautiful full-color photographs illustrating a different outdoor activity or outdoor scene each month taken by SCW photographers. The issue also includes interesting and informative articles designed to help South Carolinians make the most of their time spent in the great South Carolina outdoors, as well as helpful almanac items such as tide tables, sunrise/sunset charts, a best fishing days almanac, and the current state freshwater and saltwater fishing records.
"Our mission is to help South Carolinians understand and appreciate the value of our wildlife and educate them about resource conservation," said South Carolina Wildlife magazine editor David Lucas, "so it’s very gratifying for our publication to be recognized as a valuable information resource by a panel of reference librarians—after all, who knows more about how and where to go to find great information than librarians?"
