I am currently enrolled at Gardner-Webb University in their EDD program in Curriculum & Instruction. One of our assignments was a family/community engagement project. Immediately, I knew I wanted to utilize my freshman English 102 research class to work with the community of Cherokee to assist with problems. I contacted Robin Reed, the Director of KNOW2, and we paired together. KNOW2 identifies problems in Cherokee County and assigns task forces to tackle these problems. My class became a think tank for KNOW2. My students chose a problem given to them by Robin Reed, thoroughly researched the problem and possible solutions and then as a group wrote a proposal for KNOW2 recommending a plan or program. Finally, they will present this proposal during the symposium on April 25th. What makes this feat even more amazing is that many of these students began in developmental classes with extreme problems in writing and reading. Now, here they stand as freshmen and sophomores as group leaders, researchers, and critical thinkers. These incredible freshmen/sophomores tackled a project integrating problem-based learning, Inquiry-Based Learning, and Service Learning because students also had to volunteer with children affected by these problems. Attached is a list of the problems that the groups researched and will be presenting on. I have spent the entire semester reminding them that these are real problems that affect real people and would love to have you come and support them and see the success of their hard work using active learning strategies involving the community. Students will be prepared for questions, which are highly encouraged. If you believe you can come, please email me your RSVP by April 5th.
