Sanford vetoes increased fines for child restraint violations
(Columbia-AP) May 3, 2006 - Governor Mark Sanford vetoed a bill Wednesday night that would increase fines for not properly restraining a child in a vehicle from $25 to $150.

Sanford's spokesman Joel Sawyer says the governor vetoed the bill because it did not include a clause allowing lawyers to tell juries when someone injured in a wreck was not wearing a seat belt.

Sawyer also says the bill puts the state on the slippery slope of intruding into homes and families.

Senator Joel Lourie says the bill's goal is to protect children and shouldn't be tied to another issue. The Columbia Democrat says he will immediately begin getting lawmakers together to overturn the veto.

Also Wednesday night, Sanford has decided to let a bill requiring pharmacists and others selling cold medicines to keep records of who buys the drugs to become law without his signature. An ingredient in cold medicines can be used to make methamphetamine.
