Artificial 'Reef-Ex' project 2012 dedication ceremony June 23
A dedication ceremony for the joint artificial reef project "Reef-Ex 2012” will be held Saturday, June 23rd at Spuds Waterfront Dining in Murrells Inlet. The ceremony will be hosted by the Grand Strand Saltwater Anglers Association.
The deployment will take place the same day for those in the media interested in a boat ride to the reef site.
The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Artificial Reef Program works with S.C. Army National Guard to deploy surplus equipment, such as armored personnel carriers and shipping containers, onto artificial reef sites along the coast. This unique partnership, Reef-Ex, has taken place since 1997. This year, donated materials, 50 M113 armored personnel carriers, will be placed onto Paradise Reef and Ten Mile Reef, located off Murrells Inlet, SC. The materials create thriving habitat, and with this refurbishing project, the reef sites are teeming with a wide variety of marine species.
Interested media please contact DNR by June 13 if you will be able to attend the dedication ceremony. A catered lunch, provided by the Grand Strand Saltwater Anglers, will follow immediately after the dedication. All media are invited to attend the artificial reef deployment.
