Dear Governor's staff & Nikki Haley, I am Stanley B. Davis Jr, a recent graduate of Coastal Carolina University. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Communication with a minor in Sociology. Also while in college I was a student-athlete but more importantly to me, a mentor at Pee Dee Elementary School for 3 years. I took the steps I needed to have a successful future but I made a mistake and I need some help from you. I am writing you because I believe you can help and I believe this is a better option than others. Like I mentioned earlier, I was a student-athlete at Coastal Carolina University. I graduated May 14, 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Communication and minor in Sociology. I played track and football there but what was most important to me was that I was a mentor at Pee Dee Elementary School for 3 years in Conway, South Carolina. I not only enjoy giving back to my community but feel as if it is a need. I feel as if the youth respond to me and the way I help. I teach them and then lead them by example. I believe this is important for a better future for us all. When I was accepted into Coastal Carolina University, I felt like someone had just given me new hope and a fresh start at life. It was a chance for me to get MY life started to be the adult I wanted to be. I could blaze a path for so many kids that looked up to me to follow. I am a young, African-American male that survived and thrived out of Charleston, South Carolina. I am not from the parts where the tourist love to visit; I am from the rough, crime stricken area that is filled with single parent homes and struggling families. As I went through college I knew it was a need to reach back to the kids to show them there are better ways through life that do not involve minimum wage jobs, using or selling drugs and definitely not committing violent criminal acts. I felt great about the path I was taking and the examples I was setting. I was offered a career with Sherwin Williams as a store manager pending the completion of college. I was excited that I could finally start to take care of my family and start to do even more for my community and then I was pulled over one night for a broken tail light. I was arrested and taken to jail. I learned that I made some mistakes back in high school. During my earlier years in high school I had some minor traffic violations that I did not pay for and this resulted in me becoming a Habitual Offender. I did not know it until that moment when I was pulled over and was arrested. The officer told me that I should have received notices years ago in the mail at the address on my driver's license. I explained in court that when I received my license in high school I was at one location and moved during my junior year and did not receive them. I had not been pulled over again so I never had a reason to check my license. It was just something that I pulled out for proof of ID. I explained that I would take responsibility for my actions and that I would pay the tickets that I owed right away. I paid for every ticket that I had and for all of the restoration fees. STILL I found out that I could not be reissues a license until December 26, 2017 due to the 5 year suspension for being a Habitual Offender. This has altered my life tremendously! I could not accept my position with Sherwin Williams or most of the other places that were willing to hire me because I did not clear a driver's license background check. I cannot get to the Boys & Girls club to help out as much as I use to because not having a vehicle has cut my mobility down and I have to sit at home searching for jobs in others states that do not require driver's license background checks. I cannot find any company in my field of study willing to offer me a position without it so I work at Dick's Sporting Goods making $7.50 an hour. I have student loans that are backed up and I receive food stamps because I cannot support myself. I understand laws. I understand we should follow them. I preach to others how important they are to our safety. I have matured a great deal since high school. I have never touched drugs, I have never had any violent criminal charges, I have never had a Driving Under the Influence citation, and no wrecks. I have paid all of my fines. Please help me here. I would like to be able to support myself and live being able to go help others. I would like to live in South Carolina so I can still show the youth here that hard work pays off and you do not have to settle for minimum wage at some job they do not care about. Please help me with this, I am begging you! I love the state of South Carolina just like you do. I care about the people here too. I believe that our governor makes a difference and I would like to as well. Please help me. Sincerely, Stanley Davis
