Labor Day no holiday for DNR officers

Weekend boaters, dove season opener keep them on the go

Any day most people spend having a good time outside, you can bet Department of Natural Resources conservation officers are working hard.

That's especially true on Labor Day, not only popular for recreational boating, but also the opening day of dove hunting season. No officers got the day off.

By mid-afternoon, Brown had switched to a flats boat and was heading up the Cooper River to talk to dove hunters shooting from their boats next to Daniel Island. He had time to check hunting licenses and safety gear on two boats before he had to dock at the former Charleston Naval Base and wait out a nasty storm that blew in quickly.

Brown didn't seem to mind working on Labor Day but he admitted his work schedule is tough on other parts of his life.

"I feel bad for the people with families and kids," he said. "A lot of people don't realize that we're missing out on a lot of things."
