Public input sought to better government
Commission meeting in Myrtle Beach

The Sun News

Responding to a flurry of requests, the governor's reform commission will hold a hearing in Myrtle Beach next week.

The Commission on Management, Accountability and Performance will take public comment from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday in the conference center at Horry-Georgetown Technical College's Grand Strand campus.

The panel, appointed by Gov. Mark Sanford to recommend changes in government, had scheduled six hearings in other parts of the state, but people complained after the schedule was announced, said commission Chairman Ken Wingate.

"There was a broad enough outcry for a hearing in Myrtle Beach," Wingate said. "I was very pleasantly surprised that there was that much interest."

The commission is looking for suggestions about how to make government more efficient, more accountable and more consumer-friendly.

The panel would like specific examples with as much information as possible, Wingate said. "We're not just here as a complaint department," he said.

Speakers will have up to two minutes.

People who have ideas but feel uncomfortable about speaking in public may submit written comments either at the hearing or by mailing to the MAP Commission, c/o Governor's Office, P.O. Box 12267, Columbia, SC 29211.

In the hearings so far, three main themes have emerged, Wingate said. They are a desire for better information about state services; using the Internet for more services; and more one-stop shopping for services.
