Farmers are not asking for money to make a profit! We are asking for money to help pay some of our bills. We are asking you to save the SC farmer from bankruptcy! Your position that all small businesses should be treated equally is well understood. However, the insurance available to farmers is a federal insurance and does not cover the total cost of input. Certainly when one crop is lost it is helpful. However it was never intended to cover a major catastrophe such as this. And farmers are not allowed to get FEMA assistance. Row crop farming is one of the few businesses that is totally dependent on the weather! A row crop farmer can do everything right and still not make a crop. There are other consequences of failing to help SC farmers- many small businesses who supply the farmer will be affected when farmers are unable to pay their bills. The impact will be greater in small rural areas that are already struggling . We ask for federal aide to help with our roads that were destroyed by the flood. So I respectfully ask- if our state government did not have enough funds saved to cover a catastrophe, then why would we expect a small business to be able to withstand this? PLEASE SEEK FEDERAL HELP FOR FLOOD LOSS!!
