Seneca American Legion Post honors DNR officer

S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Officer Henry Barnett was recognized by Seneca Post 120 American Legion on Feb. 3 as Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. Officer Barnett given the award at an annual banquet held by the post to honor public safety officers around Oconee County.

Eighty fellow officers, legion members and public officials were in attendance.

Officer Barnett has worked for DNR for seven years performing the job effectively. DNR officers must have a thorough knowledge of both state and federal boating, hunting, and fishing laws. Officers are also expected to know and be able to enforce all other state laws. Officers must be able to ride on rough roads or water for long periods of time. Often they must walk long distances on rough terrain, through marsh, or swamps in heavy boots. Many of the officer’s working hours are spent alone, day and night; therefore, they must be able to navigate alone in daylight or darkness, in all kinds of weather, and on all types of terrain. Officer Barnett previously was employed by the Oconee County Sheriff's Office.

"Officer Barnett always steps up to the plate and displays to all that he is prepared for any challenge," said DNR Law Enforcement Col. Chisolm Frampton. "But it's more than enforcing state laws, he is also interacts with the public to educate. We couldn't do the local fishing rodeo for kids without him for instance."

Officer Barnett's name will now be submitted to the S.C. American Legion for state Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.
