It is unfathomable that someone could walk into a house of worship - a place we rely on for peace, safety and serenity - to perform such a hateful act. I do think, however, that it is time to start rethinking the way we do things, that this is not just another random act of violence from a "crazy" person. And while this was an individual act, it is rooted in something our country has to start taking responsibility for. This is our history and by doing things like flying a flag that is representative of that dark past, we are adding to a dialogue of hate that, in some cases, can result in actions that are beyond comprehension. That's why I have written to you to request, as appropriate response to this terrorist act, that you change the state flag to one that is not a symbol of violent racial oppression but one of peace and progress for our nation. Please consider this request. Thank you for your time and, again, I am sorry for all that your citizens must be going through right now. Prayers and thoughts are with you.
