2007 House gets
amendment to appoint comptroller general
An amendment to the
state Constitution that would take the office of the South Carolina comptroller
general off the ballot received final approval in the state Senate on
Tuesday.
The legislation now moves to the House, where it would require a
two-thirds vote to get on the ballot in November 2008.
Sen. Vincent
Sheheen, D-Camden, tried to amend the bill to eliminate the comptroller
general's office altogether, but the amendment failed.
It's a small
victory for Gov. Mark Sanford, who said during his re-election campaign he
wanted to allow governors to appoint at least five statewide offices that are
currently elected.
