I join in solidarity with each and every one of your constituents who mourns the loss of the nine people who were murdered in Charleston by a cowardly act of terrorism. You and the state of South Carolina owe those families and every single other family who has ever been scarred by racial hatred and oppression the common decency and humanity of removing the Confederate flag once and for all. What some say they construe to be a mark of heritage and pride is instead a reminder that bigotry is alive and well, and sanctioned by the state. You have the power to make a real change in this world, and I urge you to use that leadership: make it clear that deeming others less is not tolerated, that we all are responsible to treat each other equally, and that #blacklivesmatter. That flag must come down.
