Rift
remains over northern school campus
BEAUFORT: School board officials vow to
take county to court.
By Lolita Huckaby Carolina Morning News
The
struggle over a proposed north county high school
site continued Wednesday.
Members of
Beaufort County's Zoning Board of Appeals declined
Wednesday night to accept a request for
reconsideration from the school district of last
month's rejection of a special use permit for the
proposed high school.
School board
officials promptly responded with an announcement
they would take the matter to court.
"They
obviously don't want to hear anything else we have
to say," board Chairman Earl Campbell said after
the board's decision to take no action on the
district's request for reconsideration.
A
member who voted last month on the prevailing side
to reject the permit application could have made
the motion to reconsider but none of the four
members did so.
The district could also
wait until a written order from the Oct. 27
meeting is filed and then file an appeal but
school board attorney Ken Childs said he would
recommend the board take the matter to
court.
"How regrettable and unfortunate for
the taxpayers of Beaufort County that their tax
dollars have to be spent going to court," he
said.
The request was taken up under the
"old business" section of the
agenda.
Lonnie Randolph of Columbia,
president of the S.C. National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People, was present for the
discussion between lawyers and board
members.
"We've been following this issue
for the past four and a half years," he told the
board. "We urge you to follow the 'Golden Rule'
and treat these children in Beaufort County as you
would do others."
