Trooper charged with assault, suspended

A state trooper has been suspended
without pay after being charged with simple assault and battery, according to a
state Department of Public Safety spokesman.Spartanburg Public Safety arrested
Ronnie Manley, 36, of 124 Cornelius Road Friday morning after his girlfriend
reported an incident that happened earlier that morning.According to an incident
report, Manley's girlfriend told officers he hit her in the back of the head
with a closed fist and pulled her hair.The woman told police Manley woke her up
and accused her of seeing another man after finding two phone numbers he didn't
know on her cell phone.The report states the couple began to argue and the woman
walked outside to go to work. According to the report, Manley followed her
outside and stood between the car and the driver's side door to keep her from
closing it and backing out of the driveway.The woman told police she let go of
the brake a little bit to get Manley to move, but he didn't. According to the
report, Manley yelled and began cursing at her and grabbed her by the hair and
pulled her down and began to hit her in the back of the head.According to the
report, Manley stopped hitting the woman when a neighbor came outside and the
woman left and called the police.Sid Gaulden, spokesman for the state Department
of Public Safety, said Manley would be suspended until the case goes through the
legal system.Gaulden said that Manley is a 12-year veteran with the highway
patrol and is assigned to Troop Three, which patrols Spartanburg, Greenville,
Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties.
