Ports Authority OKs Port Royal plan

PORT ROYAL -- The S.C. State Ports Authority board unanimously approved a plan last week that will serve as a guide for the redevelopment of the Port of Port Royal.
Under the plan, which was approved Tuesday, the 57-acre waterfront property will include more than 22 acres of open space. The amount of commercial space and the size of a marina still have to be determined.
Earlier plans by the state and Port Royal included a 400-slip marina, several hundred homes, a hotel and 150,000 square feet of commercial space.
Port Royal town manager Van Willis, who attended Tuesday's meeting, said the town is a step closer to a development agreement, which must be approved by the Town Council and the Ports Authority board.
"We look favorably on this," Willis said, adding that the council will vote on the proposal next month. "We look forward to making the development agreement a reality."
Two years ago, Gov. Mark Sanford signed legislation calling for the port to be closed and sold to a private developer by the end of this year.
