Leaders from Mothers Against Drunk Driving say
a bill approved by the House today will help to reduce
alcohol-related deaths on state roads.
The bill
would lower the legal blood-alcohol limit for drunken driving
convictions from the current .10 percent to .08
percent.
It would also require an immediate
30-day driver's license suspension for anyone behind the wheel
with a blood-alcohol standard above the new
limit.
Current law allows licenses to be revoked
at .15 percent. The bill was approved by the House on a
106-to-6 vote.
South Carolina
Executive Director Betsy Lewis says MADD is pleased that the
Legislature passed a strong piece of legislation that will
enhance the state's drunk driving laws.
The bill
will head to the Senate after a routine third reading. The
Senate is considering a bill that critics say is much weaker.
