Immunization law suspended for Katrina evacuees

September 16, 2005

South Carolina has extended its exemption in the "No Shots-No School" law from 30 days to 120 days, a news release from the state Department of Health and Environmental Control said.

The change allows school-age children who evacuated from Hurricane Katrina’s disaster areas to enter school or day care while their immunization records are researched.

The "No Shots, No School" law requires immunization records be provided to ensure children entering kindergarten or first grade have received immunizations.

"This exemption can help cut any red tape to allow parents to immediately enroll their children in South Carolina’s schools or day cares," health department commissioner Earl Hunter said.
