(Atlanta-AP) Dec. 4, 2003 - The Energy Department has
told Georgia officials that it will stop paying for a
monitoring program designed to determine if the Savannah
River Site near Aiken is leaking harmful radiation.
The Energy Department told Georgia officials it will
stop the payments January 17th. The federal agency
provided almost $2 million over the past three
years to detect potential emissions into the air, water,
soil or crops.
Energy Department officials say the chances of
radiation leaks have greatly diminished since the five
reactors at the plant have been taken out of service.
Georgia operates seven monitoring stations between
Augusta and Savannah. It also oversees testing for
radiation in milk, crops, soil and river sediment.
