Sanford's Ataturk
Reference Draws Fire |
(Columbia-AP) -- Governor Mark Sanford is
drawing sharp criticism for his praise of a man considered the
founder of modern-day Turkey.
In his first State of the
State speech Wednesday, Sanford said Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was
a leader who transformed his country.
Ataturk is
reviled by those who hold him responsible for the killing or
forced relocation of millions of Greeks and
Armenians.
Sanford spokesman Will Folks says people
read history in many different ways.
Doctor Glenn
Moradian of Chapin says the reference is absolutely offensive.
Moradian says he voted for the Republican governor, but he
needs to do his research.
Moradian is of Armenian
descent.
The Reverend Ari Metrakos of Columbia's Holy
Trinity Greek Orthodox Church says Sanford should have picked
a different example. |
