South Carolina would establish a minimum wage $1 higher than the federal hourly wage under a measure that is among 101 bills filed by senators in advance of the 2007 legislative term.
Sponsored by Sen. Darrell Jackson, D-Richland, the bill would set the minimum wage in S.C. at $6.15 an hour. North Carolina approved a similar wage last year.
The federal minimum wage was last increased in 1997, and 29 states have approved higher minimum wages. South Carolina is one of eight states with no minimum wage, while two states have minimum wages below the federal rate.
