Sanford's budget could reduce Clemson's public service program

(Clemson-AP) Jan. 12, 2004 -- Clemson University may have to distribute less how-to handouts if a proposal from Governor Sanford is approved by the Legislature.

University officials say Sanford's budget proposal would reduce Clemson's public service activities program. Clemson prints more than 1000 free publications ranging from tractor safety to home vegetable gardening.

Clemson President James Barker says he is disappointed the budget did not recognize the value of the school's public service mission.

Sanford's spokesman Will Folks says the governor is trying to focus the effort of the program toward farming, not dispute the contributions Clemson makes.
