Under Gov. Mark Sanford's proposed budget, the S.C. Department of
Parks, Recreation and Tourism would need to trim $2.4 million by
reducing travel expenses and privatizing certain parks operations,
including golf courses, retail lodging units and campgrounds.
The cuts wouldn't affect tourism promotion.
In fact, the budget for grants through the Tourism Marketing
Partnership Program actually would get a $700,000 boost. Those
grants are given to destinations and groups to use promoting their
area or event.
The cuts and shifts should make the agency more efficient and do
not create a hardship, PRT department Director Chad Prosser
said.
"These are things that need to be done regardless of the
situation with the overall budget," he said.
