MIDLANDS RACES
Koon ousted; Brady on ballot

Larry Koon, the longest-serving member of the S.C. House, was defeated Tuesday by political newcomer Nikki Haley.

There is no Democratic challenger.

Koon had represented Lexington County in the House for 30 years, and many saw Haley’s victory in District 87 as a reflection of a growing and changing Lexington County.

The district in the center of the county has some of the fastest-growing neighborhoods in the Midlands.

Haley is an executive at Exotica, a family-owned clothing store near West Columbia.

In Richland County, Joan Brady topped fellow Richland County Council Republican Susan Brill in the hotly contested House District 78 race.

Brady, former mayor of Arcadia Lakes, will face Democrat Todd Specter, a real estate investor from Forest Acres, this fall. The winner will replace state Rep. Joel Lourie, who is running for state Senate.

Brill, who has served on council since 1998, will leave public office after December.

In other Midlands races:

• In Kershaw County, Dennis Arledge and Don Spivey are headed for a recount Thursday to determine who will compete for House Seat 52 in November.

Spivey had a lead of less than 1 percentage point over Arledge. The winner will face Democrat Laurie Slade Funderburk in November. Funderburk won a special election earlier this month to finish Vincent Sheheen’s unexpired term.

• Voters elected Valerie Hutchinson over Michael Letts to replace Brill on Richland County Council.
