DNR wins State Library Notable Document Award

The South Carolina State Library recently presented the S.C. Department of Natural Resources with one of 10 South Carolina Notable State Documents Awards for the document, “Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy 2005-2010.”

The Notable State Documents selections are announced annually on or near Freedom of Information Day, March 16, the birthday of President James Madison, an early proponent of citizen access to government information.

The awards for 2006 documents were presented to the winning agencies by Mary Morgan, State Library director of information services, at a March 15 ceremony at the State Library. Interim Director Curtis Rogers congratulated the winners. “It gives me great pleasure for the South Carolina State Library to formally acknowledge such exemplary state government documents and the excellent work of South Carolina’s state government employees,” Rogers said.

In presenting the award for the “Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy,”Morgan said, “This publication is the result of a major planning effort to identify the challenges facing the state’s diverse wildlife species and to devise strategies to conserve those species and their habitats. It emphasizes a cooperative, proactive approach to conservation, inviting local governments, businesses, and conservation-minded organizations and individuals to join in the task of maintaining South Carolina's fish and wildlife resources for current and future generations. This report is a beautifully illustrated overview of the state’s wildlife and ecosystems, with wide appeal and usefulness.”
