Sometimes
rocking boat what’s needed the most
October

The
fact that presidential and senatorial elections are only weeks
away keeps taxing and spending before the voters. There’s
nothing new about that, of course. Actually, there’s nothing
new about those issues at any time. Nowadays, they are always
in the forefront of public discourse. Still, there are a
few differences this time around that deserve attention. One
is that ol’ “how it’s always been done” attitude. Somebody is
rocking the boat. It’s about budgeting. There are some
South Carolinians who don’t think much of Gov. Mark Sanford’s
approach to budgeting. After years of never being questioned
to the extent he’s doing, all of a sudden they are being
called upon to explain their spending. To say the least,
Sanford’s tight-fisted style was sure to bring out the
critics. That’s OK. Every tax dollar spent by state government
is backed by a constituency that can offer every imaginable
argument as to why the appropriations should keep
flowing. One thing taxpayers ought to agree with, though.
Challenging the spending culture and looking for new and more
efficient ways to do things is long overdue. Justifying all
spending of tax monies should be expected by every taxpayer in
the state. Give Sanford good marks for that.
