2001 Eighth Grade Writing Award Topics
The composition is to be written on a common theme. Students should select only one of the four topics. Please be reminded that while teachers are encouraged to work with students and teach the writing process, their active involvement in the creativity of the essay should be limited.
1. Some of the symbols that represent South Carolina are the Palmetto Tree, the Carolina Wren, and the Yellow Jessamine. If you were asked by Lieutenant Governor Peeler to choose another symbol for the state, what would it be and why?
2. The pressure to "fit in" has become a problem in many high schools today. How do you plan to cope with this peer pressure when you enter high school?
