Sanford's budget could cut Clemson's public service program

Associated Press

Clemson University may have to distribute less how-to handouts if a proposal from Gov. Sanford is approved by the Legislature.

Sanford's $5.1 billion budget would "dramatically reduce" Clemson's public service activities program, university officials said.

Clemson prints more than 1,000 free publications ranging from tractor safety to home vegetable gardening.

"We were disappointed that the budget did not recognize the value of our public service mission or more aggressively support the role of research universities in economic development," said Clemson President James Barker.

Sanford's spokesman Will Folks said the governor is trying to focus the effort of the program, not dispute the contributions Clemson makes. Folks says the governor wants to focus the program on farming.
