Governor
Nikki Haley Office of the Governor 1205 Pendleton
Street Columbia, SC 29201
Dear Governor Haley,
I'm
writing today to ask that you do all you can to support
much-needed wildlife conservation efforts. I HAVE ALWAYS RESPECTED YOU
AND I THINK THAT YOU HAVE A BIG HEART FOR LIVING THINGS, SO PLEASE DO
ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING IN YOUR POWER(which is a lot)TO REVERSE THE
CURRENT COURSE OF BUTTERFLY DECLINE AND HELP RETURN THEM TO THEIR
FORMER POPULATIONS SO THAT THEY DO NOT BECOME EXTINCT. IMAGINE: NEVER
AGAIN SEEING A MONARCH BUTTERFLY. THAT'S HARD TO IMAGINE SINCE I'VE
SEEN THEM SINCE I WAS A KID. BUT WE WON'T HAVE TO IMAGINE IT IF THEY GO
EXTINCT. WOULDN'T THAT BE A CRYING SHAME AND A CRIME? ESPECIALLY SINCE
IT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED? IMAGINE: IMAGINE: MONARCH
BUTTERFLIES EXTINCT IN NORTH AMERICA.--as a story or headline in a
newspaper or in a school book about their history and students studying
about "when they were alive and well but now extinct". Please
keep them from becoming extinct so that we don't study about
their extinction, rather, we enjoy and learn about them by seeing them
flying around. WILL WE WAKE UP ONLY WHEN IT'S TOO LATE?
Hundreds
of species are currently in the pipeline for listing decisions by the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and as industries continue to expand
and climate change increases the frequency of catastrophic fires and
other extreme weather events, this problem will only get
worse.
With these new threats, the time is ripe for policy that
reflects the latest developments in science and economics. We now have
the ability to better quantify impacts to species and habitats, and to
trigger market mechanisms like habitat exchanges that create net
benefit, ensuring long-term success.
These policies will protect
both the natural resources that make our state great, and our economy.
It's a win-win, and I hope that you will make protecting our wildlife a
priority for your administration.
Thank you,
Mrs. Jeanette
